    Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the price of my class?

The price of your class includes a 30 min. group lesson once a week as well as free public skating admission for the duration of the class session. Skate rental is included on the day of class. We strongly recommend practicing on our public sessions to improve your skating skills! An annual membership to U.S. Figure Skating is also included with the price of your class. (U.S. Figure Skating is endorsed by U.S.A. Hockey.)

How long do the sessions run?

All Thurs/ Fri/ Sun classes are 6-week sessions. All Mon/ Tues/ Sat classes are 9-week sessions. As soon as one session ends, there will be a new session starting the next week.

What will my child learn in a beginner class?

Our beginner classes are designed for skaters who have never stepped on the ice. Tots (ages 3-6) will ideally learn how to properly fall down, stand up on their own, march across the ice, and glide. Our tots classes are designed as fun and interactive classes to get children interested in ice skating. Basic 1 (ages 7-16) and Hockey 1 (ages 7-16) will ideally learn the basics of forward and backward skating, gliding, and stopping. Skaters may need to take a class more than once to master the basics.

    What should my skater wear?

We recommend wearing layered, comfortable clothing, and gloves. Helmets are recommended for younger skaters.

What do I need to do on my first day of class?

Please show up at least 15 min. early on your first day of class. We will have a skate school check-in desk set up for your first day. (Weekday daytime classes will check in at the front desk.) When you check in, you will get your public session pass and you will be directed to the skate rental area to get skates. Your instructor will meet you in skate rental on the first day of class. After the first week, you do not need to check in for class and your instructor will meet you on the ice.

    How do I sign up?

You can sign up online at www.icemidwest.com, in person at the rink, or over the phone 913-851-1600.

Do I need to sign up ahead of time?

Classes will be closed off when full, so we strongly prefer and encourage that you sign up ahead of time. Signing up ahead of time will help us ensure that we have enough instructors on each class and also to ensure that we have you child?s name on our rosters for the first day of class.

How do I know what level to sign up for next?

On the last day of class, an evaluation will be given instructing you on which class to sign up for next.

    What is the class progression?

Tots (ages 3-6) will start in Snowplow Sam Levels 1-3 and Beginners (ages 7-16) will start in Basic 1 (Figure Skating) or Hockey 1 and will then advance to:

    • Figure Skating Track:
Basic Levels 2-8 followed by Freestyle 1-6.
    • Hockey Skating Track:
Hockey Levels 2-4 followed by Stick & Helmet.

When can I make up a class?

Make up classes are offered as a convenience to our customers who may have missed one or more classes. Makeup classes will be offered approximately once a month. We do not allow any other make ups as we strive to maintain a specific student to teacher ratio (8:1 for tot classes and 12:1 for all other classes) and because this disrupts the flow of the class. Upcoming make up class times will be posted online as well as at the rink.

Can I get a refund on my class?

Ice Midwest has a no refund policy on skate school classes. We will, however, hold your credit to use when your child wants to come back or to use within your family. If you are uncertain as to whether your child would like to skate, we recommend coming to one of our public sessions to try it out.
